What are QR codes? Watch Video

What are these funny black squares I keep seeing?

They are commonly known as a QR Code®, QR being short for 'Quick Response'.

What is a QR Code®?

A QR Code® is a two dimensional barcode designed to be used with a compatible mobile. By simply scanning the codes via the camera on a compatible mobile, the codes act as a gateway to a whole new world of accessing mobile information, mobile websites & content. Telstra are introducing these codes to Australia and codes generated by Telstra will be known as Telstra Mobile Codes. Telstra Mobile Codes can be scanned using compatible Telstra 3G or Next G™ mobiles.

What is the difference between a QR Code® and a Telstra Mobile Code?

There is no physical difference, however Telstra is introducing the codes to Australia and codes generated by Telstra will be known as Telstra Mobile Codes and much of the content that the codes lead to will be free1 and/or exclusive to Telstra Next G™ and 3G mobile customers with compatible mobiles.

How do the codes work and what do they do?

Just as standard barcodes encode numbers Telstra Mobile Codes encode whole words and sentences, including web addresses and relevant information. So when you scan or snap a Telstra Mobile Code with your compatible Telstra 3G or Next G™ mobile, it could send you to a web page, transfer contact details to your phone, reveal secret messages or give you quick access to mobile-only content. The only way to know what a Telstra Mobile Code will reveal is to scan it and check it out for yourself. All you need is a Telstra Code Reader on your compatible Telstra 3G or Next G™ mobile.

Can I create my own code?

Yes. You can now create your own codes with the Telstra Code Generator. Visit our website telstra.com/codes to find out how you can create your own Telstra Mobile Codes, and what they can do for you.

What is a Telstra Code Reader?

The Telstra Code Reader is a free code reader from Telstra that can decode any Telstra Mobile Code or QR Code® you find in the real world – even codes you make yourself. Some Telstra Next G™ and 3G mobile customers can already find the Telstra Code Reader in their MyPlace menu.

How much does it cost to scan a Telstra Mobile Code or QR Code®?

Scanning a Telstra Mobile Code is free for Next G™ customers with a compatible mobile. Downloading the Telstra Code Reader is also free for Next G™ customers with a compatible mobile. Many mobile codes brought to you by Telstra will lead you to content that is free1 if you are a Telstra Next G™ or 3G customer. However, sometimes Telstra Mobile Codes or a QR Code® will take you to mobile web content that incurs data fees. For more information on data costs, contact your service provider.
